This self portrait is inspired by the work of Baroque artist Vermeer. Vermeer is known for his use of light in his work. He has a very soft blending technique. I wanted to to to use some of the same blending and light techniques as Vermeer in this artwork. This is why i tried to create a contrast between the black background and the face, as seen in Vermeer's, Girl With the Pearl Earring. I wanted to take specific care in high and lowlights of my face. In the Girl With the Pearl Earring, the girl is faced towards the light source. I did the same thing with my piece, but instead used a profile view.
I transferred the image onto the paper using the grid method. I then started to paint by using blocks of color and then slowly building them together. After I had finished the face, I blended my dark hair into the background. I used many yellow and red tones to create the my skin. |

This self portrait is inspired by Van Gogh. I wanted to create a piece with the same type of movement through brush strokes as Gogh, although I used oil pastels instead of paint. I also wanted to use many bright colors, but still have the overall piece flow together. I used the grid method for this piece, and referenced a photo with a different angle than my other self portrait. This angle forces the viewer to pretend as though they were looking up to me, while the other is at an equal level. I colored in base colors on this piece and then added detail with other oil pastels. instead of creating the same type of background as in the original photo, I decided to create something that looks like wallpaper, because many of Van Gogh's self portraits have wall paper in the background.
